A row of shops, built in Victorian times but with modern shopfronts The reconstructed Newcomen engine in its engine house, Black Country Museum, Dudley Many high streets have clock-towers, mostly built during Victorian times when household clock were beyond the means of working families, who had to be at work on time. This one is in Epsom. Notice the great amount of detail in what is, after all, a utilitarian building (The curved roofs were originally the public toilets!) Builders have traditionally used local materials for their work. Here, in Surrey's chalk downland many older houses (and a few newer ones, too) have walls of flint.

This perfectly normal looking house is, in fact, made of cast iron. The walls consist of cast iron plates bolted together. It is one of the many interesting things to see at the Black Country Living Museum, Dudley, W.Midlands.

This building, built in 1843, was once the warehouse of the Coalbrookdale Company. It is now The Museum of Iron, part of the Ironbridge Gorge Museums Like many Victorian industrial buildings, it had a clock so that the workers (who probably could not afford their own clocks) would know when it was time for work. Another old building that has had a change of use. Once one of the buildings of the Coalport China Works (notice the bell tower) and now, as the signs on the wall indicate, a youth hostel.
