Dominating one end of Hope Street,
Liverpool is the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the
King, which is the is the seat (Greek
'Cathedra') of the Archbishop of Liverpool, who is the spiritual
leader of Northern Province of the Catholic Church in England,
comprising seven dioceses in all. |
Country churches are one of the glories
of Britain. In an increasingly secular world, many of Britain's
churches are tended with loving care and are still often a focus of
village life. In its gravestones and memorials the Church can
tell much of the history of the village.
In many churchyards yew trees grow, a memory of the time when yew
wood was used to make arrows and the enclosed churchyard was one of
the few places where domestic animals could not get at, and eat the
leaves, with inevitably fatal results.
This church is in the Staffordshire village of Elford. |
